WEST COAST ORIENTAL With VEIL - ALL LEVELS
SATURDAY MARCH 24 9:00-10:30am Room TBA
In this choreography based workshop, Courtney will introduce the elements of a classic American Cabaret Intro popular on the West Coast. Due to the influence of immigration patterns of people from the Middle East and from local dance styles, the West Coast of the US has a style of raks sharki with a flavor all its own! We’ll dig into the West Coast signature styling including dynamic accents, crisp isolations, and swirling veil!
This workshop is for all levels of dancer! Bring your veil (or Courtney will have a couple to borrow)!
Courtney is a Los Angeles based multi award-winning belly dance artist. She travels nationally and internationally performing and instructing.
A lifelong student of dance and music, Courtney found Middle Eastern Dance while living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Courtney draws on her previous classical ballet training as a foundation for her training and technique. Courtney has studied extensively with Sandra of San Francisco, Aziza of Canada, and other internationally renowned belly dance artists to further develop her elegant style.
Courtney has a Bachelor of Arts in Music focusing on Ethnomusicology from Columbia University. She is a classically trained pianist, flutist, and vocalist, lending natural musicality to every performance. Courtney’s extensive study of music theory, ear training, and music’s cultural context drive her passion for Middle Eastern Dance not only as art, but also for its roots as folk dance.
FRIDAY MARCH 23 9:00-10:30am ROOM TBA
There is magnetism in a dancer who can ooze elegance in their dance. My hope is impart a better hold on your inner grace and bring it forward in combination geared toward making an emotional connection that the viewer can't take their eyes off. This workshop will start off with a warm up that will prepare us for strong posture and fluidity in the arms. We will focus on a deeper awareness of the line and shapes our bodies make in movement.
FRIDAY MARCH 23 1:00-2:30pm ROOM TBA
Let's step away from technique training of micro movements, and push ourselves out of the everyday stance and into exploring our kinesphere. Our focus will be on angular relationships in space. Simple shapes will be highlighted that create a dynamic visual experience. A short combination will be introduced utilizing the presented principles and then the group will be guided through an improvisational piece to let people find their own approach to artistic extension. All levels of dance welcome!
